University of Florida researchers are three years into a four-year study to help landscape and nursery workers manage low back pain caused or aggravated by physically demanding work. The study includes 127 workers and 21 supervisors from 16 nursery and landscaping companies recruited with help from the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA).

As part of the study, researchers developed short training videos demonstrating exercises and stretches designed to counteract the effects of lifting, bending and twisting. Participants also receive text messages during the day with reminders of ergonomic modifications for work tasks.

Early results show promising reductions in pain and difficulty with work tasks, improved functional ability and less stress about back pain. Researchers are conducting final data analysis and exploring ways to make the program more widely available.
