Exciting events planned

The 2022 Irrigation Show and Education Week, taking place Dec. 5-9 in Las Vegas, is packed full of educational and entertaining events to help attendees both connect with others in the industry and learn more about the latest irrigation and lighting technologies, products and innovations.

The Innovation Hub area of the exhibit hall will host events, announcements and product demos, including a product demo presented by Superior on Dec. 7 on the value of irrigation valve maintenance and troubleshooting.

Innovation Hub will also host the Pitch Competition on Dec. 7. This competition features presentations by irrigation startup technology companies exhibiting in the Innovation Row section of the show floor.

Attendees are invited to the Heritage Irrigation Show Concert on Dec. 7 featuring live bands at the famous Las Vegas House of Blues.

The Irrigation Association is bringing back its General Session on Dec. 8 that will celebrate the industry, honor the 2022 IA award recipients and announce the winners of this year’s new product contest and Pitch Competition. To celebrate the last day of the trade show, the IA is hosting a Craft Brewfest, sponsored by Ewing, on the show floor on Dec. 8. Numerous other events are planned for first-time show attendees, IA members and other industry groups. Check irrigationshow.org for regular show updates and to see the full schedule of events.

Smart Water Application Technologies

SWAT awards presented at WSI

The Irrigation Association announced the winners of the 2022 Smart Water Application Technology awards on Oct. 5 during the WaterSmart Innovations conference in Las Vegas. These annual awards recognize water providers for their commitment to promoting outdoor water conservation by increasing engagement, education and partnerships with important stakeholders.

The Outstanding Public Engagement Award was presented to the Sonoma-Marin Saving Water Partnership in California for its Water Smart Landscape Design Template project. This project was a response to the devastating October 2017 wildfires in Sonoma and Napa counties in California. To assist those rebuilding, the Sonoma-Marin Saving Water Partnership created eight free permit-ready landscape design templates and a companion guide that encourage the installation of water-efficient, climate-appropriate and sustainable landscapes. More than 40% of all rebuilt homes in the region have utilized the templates, leading to an estimated 8.7 million gallons less of water used each year.

The Outstanding Industry Partnership Award was presented to the Inland Empire Utilities Agency in Chino, California, for its Residential Small Site Controller Upgrade Program. This program focuses on improving residential outdoor irrigation efficiency through in-person customer educational training and upgrading nonweather-based irrigation controllers to smart controllers. Since 2016, the program serving western San Bernardino County has upgraded a total of 2,340 sites with 2,669 weather-based irrigation controllers for an estimated lifetime water savings of 1,105 acre-feet.

Applications for the 2023 SWAT awards will open in early 2023. More information is available at swatirrigation.org.
