Homeowners continue investing in outdoor living spaces, including lighting

Houzz, an online platform focused on home design, renovation, landscaping and construction, released survey results showing that homeowners are investing in projects that expand usable living space and create more comfortable areas for relaxation and entertaining.
New survey results highlight residential demand for highly functional outdoor environments, with more than half including outdoor lighting.

Houzz, an online platform focused on home design, renovation, landscaping and construction, released survey results showing that homeowners are investing in projects that expand usable living space and create more comfortable areas for relaxation and entertaining. Among the 1,191 U.S. homeowners surveyed, 71% (up from 65% in 2024) plan to hire contractors for outdoor projects.

One of the biggest priorities for residential customers is creating an outdoor living space, with nearly 84% of renovated spaces having a lounge or seating area and 71% including a sofa or lounge chairs. More than half (66%) reported including outdoor lighting in their outdoor living projects.

The study also found that homeowners are prioritizing lower-maintenance landscapes, with 19% of respondents saying they chose to install synthetic lawns over natural turfgrass. Homeowners also continue to choose low-maintenance, native and drought-resistant plants, with 56% choosing plants that attract pollinators.
