The scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $3,000, were awarded to students who have shown a passion and interest in sustainability, stewardship and use of water, and the essential contributions irrigated landscapes and irrigated agriculture have in improving the quality of life through a reliable global food supply and vital green spaces.

Since the program’s start in 2016, more than 100 students have been awarded scholarships.

What does receiving this scholarship mean to you?

Receiving the Irrigation Association Scholarship and being named an Anthony W. “Tony” LaFetra Scholar is a special honor. It affirms that my work in water conservation matters and motivates me to keep going. This support will help me complete my studies, earn CIT and CLIA certifications, and invest in essential tools.

What are your future plans in the irrigation or broader green industry?

I plan to become a water conservation specialist, helping California landscapes thrive with innovative, water-saving solutions.

What sparked your interest in this field?

I came into irrigation from the IT field, where I worked in quality assurance. After moving to the U.S., I developed a passion for succulent gardening and decided to change my career path. I enrolled in the Horticulture program at Las Positas College and took a Landscape Irrigation Systems class. I was fascinated by this whole new world—especially how sustainable irrigation can make a real difference for the environment, and I decided to focus on irrigation auditing and water conservation.

What advice or encouragement would you give to others exploring this career path?

Follow your curiosity and stay open to every learning opportunity. Attend industry workshops hosted by local landscape organizations, in-house training sessions, and larger industry events. Seek internships with landscape or irrigation companies to gain hands-on experience and build new skills. Networking is also important: join professional associations, connect with industry professionals, and learn from their experience.
